Central Park Middle School
NASA
Explorer School
 |
Each year, the NASA Explorer School program establishes a
three-year partnership between NASA and fifty school teams from
across the country. Central Park Middle School is the
first team named in New York State and was one of 430 applicants
from across the U.S.
NASA Explorer
Schools provide fascinating opportunities for students, teachers
and community members to engage in space exploration and
scientific discovery. Throughout this three-year partnership
with NASA, students and their families will take a closer look
at air travel and space flight
as well as explore the unknown. While working with NASA
experts, students will conduct experiments and engage in an
array of scientific and engineering adventures. Educators
and students become a part of NASA research, discoveries and the
missions. The program, addressing the State Standards,
gives students the opportunity to apply science, mathematics and
technology to the real-world in addition to learning about NASA
and the vast array of career options.
As a partner with
NASA, the Explorer School teams receive teaching resources,
unique content, technology tools as well as have access to
experts and Aerospace Education Specialists.
As an Explorer
School, Central Park has agreed to provide sustained
professional development, exciting student learning
opportunities, integration of technology and the involvement of
families.
The teams work
closely with NASA personnel to develop and implement team Action
Plans for the staff and the students.
Program
Objectives include:
- Increase
student ability to apply science, mathematics, technology
concepts

A team of
teachers from Central Park Middle School attended a weeklong
training session at Goddard Space Flight Center. They
learned about programs to connect students with the
International Space Station using Ham radio equipment, the Young
Astronauts Program, Sun Earth Connection, aeronautics and the
Civil Air Patrol, student experiment mission and much more. |
