Students transform
classroom fish tank
from 'boring' to colorful and exciting
When
Mont Pleasant Middle School art teacher Josh Bate noticed a
“boring” fish tank in one of the school classrooms, his first
thought was that the students could put creative energy to work
and give the fish tank some flair. Bate shared his idea with science teachers James Hutson and Jessica Kohout.
The three then
came up with a multidisciplinary plan that in the end would
provide the students with fun, exciting, creative lessons and give
the fish tank colorful decor.
The
three teachers met with librarian Alicia Hazen who would help
them find information and research materials on fish. The
teachers then guided the students through a research project in
which they utilized many sources including books and the
Internet.
The students used their findings to develop a plan and sketch
ideas of what the tank would look like. They learned coil,
pinch and slab building techniques in order to create their
designs out of clay. After designing and forming the pieces for
the tank, they were fired and glazed. After the works were
complete, the school held a small art opening for the science
teachers and Bate’s first period class.
The once "boring" tank is now full of color
and presents quite a bit of artistic flair.
Check it out for yourself.
