Volunteers come together to beautify school

Lowe’s Heroes Volunteer Program left a mark at Dr. Martin Luther King Magnet School this fall when employee volunteers from ten local stores came together to beautify the school grounds and landscaping - - because they care about the community.

Lowe’s provided a huge truck full of flowers, plants and shrubs. The volunteers worked with the school’s Green Team to plant them at the main entrance, around the school and in the courtyard.  The Green Team is an after school program that maintains the school grounds, replants flowers and promotes recycling in the building.  The project added the perfect final touch to a school that has recently been remodeled and expanded.

The project at King School is just one of thousands that the Lowe’s Heroes Volunteer Program has tackled in the last couple of years.  In 2009, thousands of employees from more than 1,000 stores took on projects.  Employees contributed thousands of hours of volunteer work and nearly $1 million in materials.

Each year Lowe’s Heroes chooses an improvement project that will make a difference in a community.  The goal is to improve the communities where Lowe’s  customers and employees work and live.

Magnet Parent Liaison Kelly Kilian opened the door for the project at King School.  She approached Lowe’s as part of her efforts to solicit donations for the school’s PTO and PPT school improvement projects, specifically the main entrance and courtyard.   “This part of our school became a main focal point after we saw the beautiful landscaping that was completed after the construction of the new middle level wing,” said Kilian.   In her conversations with Lowe’s, Kilian learned about the Lowe’s Heroes program.  Once she learned that Lowe’s was taking on the project, Kilian said she contacted the school’s Green Team.
