Blodgett
Students To Build Edible Playground
A group of
students in grades 4-6 at Katharine Burr Blodgett Elementary
School will soon begin building a playground that they will
eventually eat.
Just after the April break, the students will participate in a
program called Edible Playgrounds, in which they plant fruits,
vegetables, herbs and spices in their classroom and then
transplant them to Hillhurst Park in Bellevue. The group will
then take a trip to the park twice a week to nurture the garden,
harvest the plants and eventually take them home to enjoy.
Through
the Safe Parks and Edible Playground program, students will
learn about nutrition, growing food and taking part in physical
activities. Classroom teachers and afterschool program
directors will integrate the activities into an array of lessons
in all of the core areas. Additionally, the program serves to
help instill a sense of importance of city parks and lifetime
commitment to use and protect the resources.
The food
grown in the garden will also be used in garden programs,
offered to participants to take home and donated to the
Schenectady Inner City Ministry Food Pantry.
Additional
Edible Playgrounds will be established at Carrie Street Park and
Wallingford Park.
The seeds
and plants are provided by Schenectady Inner City Ministry
Robert Woods Johnson Foundation and SAFE parks and Edible
Playgrounds.
