SHS IB Students donate about 5,200 hours to community service
$1,251 was raised and contributed to various causes

Twenty-seven students in the International Baccalaureate Program at Schenectady High School participated in service learning projects in the Schenectady community and beyond.  The extended projects for service learning are known as Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) and are a required extracurricular component of the IB program.  The CAS requirement stresses the importance of life outside the world of scholarship.  The goal is to educate the whole person and foster a more compassionate citizen.

The IB Class of 2012 recently completed their projects which  began last spring and include supporting the Akuffo Tom School in Ghana, knitting for Hats for the Homeless and Especially You, raising money for Plumpy Nut nutritional food supplements, Les Petites Hommes (Paris and New York), REACH work camp (West Virginia) and Blankets for Babies.

On December 1 at a celebration, students in the IB program presented checks to beneficiaries totaling $1,251.  Students spent 5,1091 hours which is estimated to value $37,634.75.
