The
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is a
rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading to
examinations and meets the needs of highly motivated
secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19
years. The program is designed as a comprehensive
two-year curriculum that allows graduates to fulfill the
requirements of various national educational systems.
The program is available in English, French and Spanish.
In order to
prepare students for the challenge of the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program in eleventh grade, Schenectady
High School has established a two-year pre-IB course of
study for students in grades nine and ten. While it is
possible to enter Schenectady High School's IB program
without completing the pre-IB curriculum, it is strongly
recommended that students take advantage of the preparation
that the pre-IB program offers.
IB's
international standards far exceed even New York State's
Regents standards. Following the traditional path in
grades nine and ten may not adequately prepare a student for
the rigorous demand of the IB curriculum.
Students
who complete the pre-IB coursework in good standing will not
be required to apply for acceptance into the diploma
program.
The
International Baccalaureate Mission
Through comprehensive and balanced curriula coupled with
challenging assessment, the International Organization aims
to assist schools in their endeavors to develop the
individual talents of young people and teach them to relate
the experience of the classroom to the realities of the
world outside. Beyond intellectual rigor and high
academic standards, strong emphasis is placed n the ideals
of international understanding and responsible citizenship,
to the end that IB students may become critical and
compassionate thinkers, life-long learners and informed
participants in local and world affairs, conscious of the
shared humanity that binds all people together while
respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that make
for the richness of life.
University Recognition
Students who are awarded the IB diploma gain admission to
the most selective colleges and universities throughout the
world including prestigious institutions such as Oxford and
the Sorbonne, Yale and Union College.
Many
colleges offer advanced standing or course credit to
students with high scores on IB exams. For example,
SUNY Binghamton will award sophomore standing to students
who score a total of 30 point on IB examinations. |
