Students Work with Artist on Mobile
To Hang in
Proctor's New Theatre
During
the week of September 17, two sixth grade classes at Hamilton
Elementary School worked with visual artist
Kevin Reese of School Sculptures to create a giant mobile that
will hang in the new atrium at Proctors GE Theatre. The
mobile will be installed on Friday, September 21 and will hang
in the entrance to coincide with the Iwerks Extreme Screen film
BUGS 3D.
Reese
said the mobile will be about 24 feet wide and 17 feet deep.
He said they won't know the dimensions for sure until it's
complete and ready to hang.
Throughout the
week the
students worked with the artist and each have a had a hand in the construction
of the artwork.
Reese
said parts of the mobile are inspired by student drawings.
"These antenna-like things up here, going in this direction will
be very different," he said. "The idea comes from this
student drawing," he added as he pointed to a student sketch.
Kevin Reese is a teaching artist who has been working with young
people and teachers throughout the United States and abroad
since the early 1980's. He has developed workshops to
accompany both of his solo performances that address social
studies, language arts and visual arts. His specialty is
leading workshops about the designing and building of mobiles.
The
artist residency is the result of a partnership between
Schenectady School District and Proctor's Theatre.
