Hamilton Second Graders Learn About 'The First Thanksgiving'
Technology connects classes with the
Plimoth Plantation Museum
Hamilton
second graders learned about The First Thanksgiving when
they participated in a live chat with staff members at the
Plimoth Plantation Museum
in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The three
classes of students, as well as students from classes all over
the country, had an opportunity to ask questions of
Patience, a Pilgrim girl and Kerri, a Wampanoag
woman, as if the two truly lived the life of the first settlers
and Native American friend.
The classes sat
before the large SMART board screen as the teachers typed their
questions to the staff at the Plimoth Plantation. In live
time, the staff acting as pilgrim and Wampanoag people who lived
almost 400 years ago, returned answers to the student questions.
The Hamilton
second graders asked many questions including:
- Where did
the seeds for the first garden come from?
- What
utensils did the Native Americans use to eat with?
- How was
the grass thatching attached to the wetu and the common
house?
- What games
did the Native American and Pilgrim children play?
The
live chat was sponsored by Scholastic.com on the education web
page, The First Thanksgiving. The website includes video
clips that show the Voyage of the Mayflower, a comparative
overview of the Daily Life of the Pilgrim settler and Wampanoag
people and images of what the Thanksgiving Feast might have
looked like.
The students
ended the unit of study with a feast of their own on the
Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They enjoyed food that was
similar to that of the First Thanksgiving.
