Caught In the Act
PBIS Program Encourages Positive Behavior

When students at Hamilton Elementary School are caught doing something nice for another student, staff member or the school, they are rewarded with an "I-spy" certificate.

Examples of nice or positive behaviors include helping another student with his or her lunch tray, offering to help carry a teacher's heavy bag from the car or picking up garbage in the hallway.

This reward system is part of the school wide program called  Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) which is designed to establish a positive climate of appropriate behaviors.  The focus is on teaching behavioral rules and expectations and rewarding students for following them rather than waiting for misbehavior to occur and then responding.

Hamilton students who received an "I-Spy" certificate in October had their names entered into a drawing. One name was drawn from each grade level.  The lucky winners got to spend some fun time painting their own pumpkins with Melody York, the school's art teacher.

Students who exhibit positive behavior during the month of November will have their names entered into a drawing for a food basket.
