I am recommending
this award for Lori McCambley because she exemplifies
what a Schenectady City School District teacher should be.
Mrs. McCambley holds high standards for all of her students at
Mont Pleasant Middle School. She works hard to
differentiate her instruction to meet all levels of learners.
Often this requires working through her lunch and planning
periods to find and copy appropriate materials as well as
meeting with other teachers.
Mrs. McCambley
goes above and beyond for her students. She bakes for her
students' birthdays. Often this is the only recognition a
student will receive on this special day. Many of the
students in our school have limited background knowledge which
impacts their vocabulary skills. Mrs. McCambley will bring
in items that she believes the students will enjoy and learn
from such as pussy willows or sea shells.
It is obvious how
committed Mrs. McCambley is to her position at Mont Pleasant
Middle School. She is always available to spend extra time
with students to better help them with their reading skills.
Mrs. McCambley is also readily available to meet with teachers
and help them to differentiate subject area material to an
appropriate level of learning. Mrs. McCambley holds her
colleagues to high expectations in order to meet student needs.
Mrs. McCambley is
actively involved in multiple school activities such as the
Building Leadership Team, Scholastic Book Fair, Sunshine Club,
PLC, any-bullying task force, mentoring and multiple school
events.
Mrs. McCambley
recognizes the value of building relationships with her
students. She is a strong colleague and encourages
professionalism with a touch of warmth.
Mrs. McCambley has
taken the lead in recognizing and formulating a plan for the
Guyanese population within our school. This group of students
often exhibit similar delays in their language
structure/background knowledge that directly impacts their
academic ability and overall educational success. Mrs.
McCambley has taken her planning periods and time after school
to meet with these students and provide additional supports.
She created the Culture Club which exposes Guyanese students to
different aspects of the American culture and gives them
additional background knowledge. Mrs. McCambley has
attended out of school events which has given her more insight
into this population as well as building school/community
relationships. Most recently, Mrs. McCambley has taken an
active role in the task force that is being created to address
similar concerns district wide.
We are very
blessed to have such a dedicated and professional reading
specialist/teacher within our school. I feel that she is
an excellent candidate for the Golden Apple Award and deserves
to be recognized for her efforts and dedication to our students.
