Four year old students create owl sculptures
Hung on tree on Historical Society

Four year old students in Danielle Herring’s Pre-k class created these beautiful glazed owl sculptures, based on the book Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson. The Owl Baby Tree was on display at the Schenectady County Historical Society Festival of Trees.

Art Teacher Cindy Turgeon introduced sculpture to students by having students form clay into shapes. Students were taught how artists use shape and texture to create a sculpture.  Each child added texture to their sculpture by using wooden tools to create feathers, a beak and eyes for their owl. The sculptures were then fired in a kiln. Students then glazed the sculptures to add color and detail to each owl.

This project is part of collaboration between the Schenectady County Historical Society and Fulton Early Childhood Education Center. This collaboration focuses on introducing local history to SCSD Pre-k and Kindergarten students.
