Teacher Workshop Focuses on Turning Words into
Design
The
following artwork was developed by Schenectady teachers during a
professional development workshop presented by Shelly Dante, a
teacher at Oneida Middle School.
The workshop
focused on literacy and referred to selected legends to use with
students in grades K-8. The objective was for teachers to
use stories as a means for students to understand how to
turn the words of story into visual design.
Teachers
created prints based on the work and techniques of Hawaiian
printmakers and Hawaiian and Iroquois legends.
Various
printmaking and calligraphy inks were used. The participants
also learned the process of making faceless corn husk dolls and
the accompanying Iroquois legend.
