Retired Teachers Co-author Children's Book
Book Signings Scheduled

Retired Schenectady elementary school teachers Faye Tischler and Fran Gordon co-authored a recently published children’s book, Dutch Double.  The two teachers wrote the historical fiction  novel for middle readers and as instructional reading material for 4th and 5th graders.

About Dutch Double
Schenectady history comes alive in this new children’s book by local authors Faye Tischler and Fran Gordon.

Katie or Katje?  A mysterious antique button, a family heirloom received as a birthday gift, transports 13-year-old Katie Van Epps back in time to the 17th century Dutch settlement of Schenectady.  The city is her home, but home was never like this!

Katie, now Katje the servant, knows that in three days there will be a devastating massacre.  Will she be able to return to her own time and escape history, or will she be changed by it?  In this adventure, filled with danger and mystery, Katie learns about life in the 17th century and discovers important things about herself.

Brimming with local ties, this book is the result of the collaboration between several area residents.  Both authors have connections to the Schenectady area since childhood and wanted to bring the city’s exciting history to life.

Fran and Faye were teachers in the Schenectady City School District and have both lived in the Stockade at various times.  Some of the cover art for their book was inspired by a photograph of Lawrence taken by Herb Dieck, a well-known local photographer.
