Schenectady Schools Celebrate Dr. Seuss, Read Across America Volunteers stopping by to read and celebrate with students Wednesday

Many Schenectady City School District schools are celebrating National Education Association’s 13th Annual Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2, 2011.  The national reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Many members of the community, media and school district will be reading to classes and celebrating with the students.   

Below is an outline of a few of the school events. 

William C. Keane Elementary School, 1252 Albany Street
Time:  2 - 3 p.m.

  •  A wide variety of guest readers including:   Honorable Kenneth Litz, Kaela Wallman (Duane Branch Library), Superintendent John Yagielski, Schenectady High School students, Tim Drawbridge (News Channel 13), Joseph DiCaprio (Principal of ACC at Pleasant Valley), Mayor Brian Stratton, Pam Haller (mentor), district coordinators, Lisa McCloughlin (NYS Trooper), James E. Welch, MSgt., Staff Sergeant Randy Welch and Staff Sergant Diane Solmo (NYANG-Stratton Air Force Base), Karl LaFountain (Schenectady Fire Department), Teresa Priolo (News Channel 6), Mark Herrington and Kelly Zebrowski (Union College athletes).
     

  • The Cat in the Hat will make a special appearance.
     

  • A group of students from Central Park International Magnet School will perform a segment of their production of “Seussical the Musical.” 

 

Elmer Avenue Elementary School, 90 Elmer Avenue
Time:  9:15 – 10:45 a.m.

  • 9:15 a.m. – Readers Theatre presentation and reading of Green Eggs and Ham given by The Cat in the Hat.
     

  • Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast in the gym
     

  • 10:30 a.m. - All classes Drop Everything and Read.

 

Woodlawn Elementary School, 3311 Wells Avenue

Time:  9:15 – 11 a.m.

  • 9:15 a.m. – School assembly
    Reading by Dori Marlin (News Channel 6)

        Grades 2 and 3 will sing.

  • 10 – 11 a.m. – Volunteers from the community will be reading to
    grades kindergarten – three.
     

  •  Principal Barbara Coffey will be dressed as The Cat in the Hat.
