Schenectady City School District

Four Schenectady teams are headed
to OM Competition tomorrow

Four teams of Schenectady students will be competing in the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition on Saturday, March 6 at Shenendehowa High School.

Central Park International Magnet School and King Math Science Technology Magnet School are each sending two teams.

Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition.

Schenectady's teams will be competing against dozens of school districts from the region.

Central Park's youngest team of students in grades 3-5 will be performing and competing for the first time.  "I am excited for competition," said Deaja Spencer, a fourth grader on the Division I team.  "Our team is excited and can't wait to perform."

The Central Park Division I team will perform their long term problem at 12:05 p.m. in the high school east band room.  Team members include fifth grader Mason Caruso and fourth graders Jakub Hann, Foster Kucij, Mary Liebers, Mykaela Mayo, Sidney McClaine and Deaja Spencer.

The Division II team will perform at 10:10 a.m. in the high school east main gym.  Participants are eighth graders Alex Hariraj, Ashlee LeBlanc, Ethan Peterson, seventh grader Timothy James and sixth graders Asmah Hashimi, Alyssa Mahabeer and Ledane Ram.

Central Park's teams are coached by Mrs. Malizia, Mrs. Canavan, Ms. Tanner and Mrs. Delaney.

King Magnet School's Division I team will perform at 1:25 p.m. in the high school east cafeteria.  Team members include Kyle Beberwyck, Rebecca Bellick, Deyker Edwards, John Keyes, Kristy McFarline and Myranda Morris.  Coaches are Ali Martin and Liza Salmon.  Danielle Morris is also a volunteer

King's Division II team will perform at 1:45 p.m. in the high school west auditorium.  Cassiel Achan, Amy Chinsammy, Samir Ishaque, William McFarline, Jamie Sauers, Natalie-Ann Sauers and Gyonni Winter make up the Division II team.  The team is coached by Kimberly Bisner, Sam Mustafa and Pam Tower.  Courtney O'Bryan also volunteers.

Winning teams advance to the state competition on March 27.
