Elmer
Avenue celebrates "World Hello Day"
The students
and staff at Elmer Avenue Elementary School celebrated the 38th
annual "World Hello Day" last month. World Hello Day is an
occasion for people to express their concern for world peace.
The message is to use communication rather than force to settle
conflicts. Anyone can participate in the celebration
simply by greeting ten people.
As
part of the celebration at Elmer Avenue, the students learned to
say "hello" in different languages and participated in a
school-wide assembly with guest performer Cecilia St. King.
St. King performs original American Roots music. She has
performed in Japan, New Zealand, Europe and across the U.S. She
performed at the United Nations, headlining the 2009 Culture of
Peace Week and most recently performed at the Peacebuilding
Peacelearning Intensive sponsored by the National Peace Academy
in Ohio.
The Elmer 4th
graders had an extra treat. Xin Lui, a visiting professor
at Union College, paid a visit and talked to the students about
school children in China.
World Hello Day was begun in response to the conflict between
Egypt and Israel in the Fall of 1973. Since then, World Hello
Day has been observed by people in 180 countries.
