Author Visits Elmer, Gives Tips on Writing
The
students of Elmer Avenue Elementary School enjoyed a special
treat recently. Popular children's author Ralph Fletcher
paid the students and teachers a visit.
Fletcher, also
author of several teacher resources including A Writer's
Notebook and Craft Lessons, spoke over lunch to many
teachers about his experiences and shared tips on how to get
students motivated and excited about writing.
The
students enjoyed talking with the author and learning about how
growing up in a large family inspired and motivated him to
write. The books Fig Pudding, Flying Solo
and his famous memoir Marshfield Dreams are all based on
the author's family.
Fletcher shared
some of his tips and talked about how he uses the writers
notebook as a place to keep quotations, memories and events in
his life. He told the students he goes back to the
notebook often for inspiration and ideas when he is writing.
"The students were
truly excited to meet and speak with Ralph Fletcher," said Beth
Chatnik, teacher at Elmer Avenue. "They are inspired to
write their own life story."
