Annual
Lincoln School Event
was springboard to upcoming Guyanese Multi-Cultural Night set at
Proctors
The upcoming
Guyanese Multi-Cultural
Night slated for May 20 at Proctor's Theatre was the
brainchild of a few members at Lincoln Elementary School and an
expansion of the school's annual celebration.
Ann Heuppel and
Erika Falco, both teachers at Lincoln Elementary School, started
an extracurricular activity, the Guyanese Dance Club, at the
school six years ago. Over a short period of time, the
dance club became popular that
the club was asked to perform at other schools in the district.
More, parents soon began showing up at evening performances with
Guyanese food dishes in hand.
Lincoln staff members put it all together and started
celebrating Guyanese culture with an annual ceremony that
includes dance and cultural food.
Make it
bigger
The event has
been so popular at Lincoln that Falco
thought that this year it would be a good idea to make the event even larger
and to include more members and groups of the community.
She approached Philip Morris, C.E.O of Proctor's Theatre, about
the possibility of holding a larger Guyanese Cultural Event at
Proctor's. Morris generously offered the GE Theater free
of charge. Falco then met with Philip Fields, a prominent
member of the Guyanese American Association of Schenectady to
get his thoughts about expanding the opportunity and reaching
out to others who enjoy the celebration.
Event set
for the 20th includes Lincoln dancers and more
The Guyanese
Multi-Cultural Night set for May 20 will include food, crafts,
multi-cultural displays and an array of performances including
Lincoln Elementary School Dance Groups, Shri Ram Mandir and
Groups, Schenectady Christian Communities, Schenectady Hindu
Temple and Groups and the Hamilton Art Center Music Band.
The event will
kick off at 5:30 pm at Proctors.
