Schenectady basketball coach stepping down
Sausville leaves mark with five championships
Schenectady
High School basketball coach Mark Sausville announced today that
he is resigning from the coaching position effective immediately
for personal reasons.
He noted that his
son, who is a basketball player, is getting older. “I want to
be able to attend his games,” said Sausville.
Sausville took over as varsity head coach in 1998 when Gary
DiNola stepped down. Under Sausville’s leadership,
Schenectady’s varsity team won five Big 10 championships. In
2001, his team won the Sectional title, Regional title and
NYSPHAA championship. That team, led by Jason McKrieth, and
Rashaun Freeman, finished the season 28-1. The team’s only loss
was in the Federation Tournament vs. St. Raymond’s.
Several of
Sausville’s players went on to play college Division I
basketball, including McKrieth at Rice, Freeman at UMass and
Andy Robinson at the University of Buffalo.
Sausville was
presented with a ball commemorating his 200th win at
the end of the 2010 season.
Prior to taking
over the varsity post, Sausville was an assistant varsity coach
at Schenectady for three years and the freshmen basketball coach
for two. He also served as a junior varsity coach at Linton
High School in 1989 and as junior varsity coach at Union College
in 1991-1992.
He has held a
number of basketball clinics and programs and worked at camps
throughout the region.
Sausville was a
player too. He played basketball at Mont Pleasant High School
where he graduated in 1980 as well as at the State University of
New York College at Plattsburgh.
Sausville, who has
been a special education teacher in the Schenectady City School
District for the last 18 years, will continue to teach at
Schenectady High School.
