Basketball Star Shines at Division I Delaware
Rocky Collier leads all scorers on the ESPN stage in the NCAA
Tournament Sunday
Raquel
(“Rocky) Collier, a 2004 graduate and star basketball player
from Schenectady High School played on a much larger stage this
weekend. The 5’10” MVP junior forward led the Division I -
Delaware State University Lady Hornets with 22 points and 3
steals in a loss to Vanderbilt in the first round of the 2007 NCAA
Tournament, otherwise known as the “Big Dance.” This was
Delaware's first appearance at the tournament ever.
The 21-12 Lady Hornets, who have been led by the Schenectady
native all season, played Vanderbilt in the opening
round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 18 in East
Lansing, Michigan. The 12:00 p.m. contest was played at the
15,085-seat Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of
Michigan State University, and was aired live on ESPN2.
Collier who is Delaware’s top player averages 13.5 points, 5
rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. She is a MEAC
Player-of-the-Year candidate and All-MEAC first team candidate.
She was named MVP of the MEAC tournament championship, leading the Lady Hornets into the NCAA tournament.
Tim Frame, Collier’s coach while at Schenectady High School
said, “Rocky had outstanding athletic ability. She loved to
attack the basket and had good range on her jump shot.” Frame
said he knew Collier would flourish at the next level.
Collier averaged
21 points and nine rebounds during her senior
season in high school. She was Athlete-of- the-Year during 11th
and 12th grade. She was named 2003- 04 team MVP, a Channel 13
All-Star during both her 11th and 12th grade seasons and was
Most Valuable Player of Schenectady's Hilliard Tournament.
Collier was also an MVP volleyball player on the Schenectady
High School team that finished
runner-up in the Sectionals.
