2010 Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees and Honorees Announced

Dinner & ceremony set for Sept. 13

The Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame committee is pleased to announce that the 2010 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be Ray Trail (Mont Pleasant HS), a national champion cross-country runner, and Warren Crow (Linton HS), a national champion collegiate wrestler.  This year’s celebration will also include a special “Legacy Tribute” honoring three undefeated teams on the 50th anniversary of their outstanding seasons.  These teams are the 1959-60 Linton High School basketball team, the 1960 Linton High School golf team and the 1960 Mont Pleasant High School baseball team.

Ray Trail ran cross country and track at Mont Pleasant for Norm Kitching.  He won the individual cross country national championship in 1935 and 1936.  He set a record in 1935.  He broke Glenn Cunningham’s world record in the scholastic mile (May, 1936).  He also set a national scholastic indoor mile record at Madison Square Garden (February, 1936).  In addition, he ran the anchor leg on Mont Pleasant’s medley relay championship team at the 1936 Penn Relays.

Warren Crow wrestled three seasons at Linton for Pete Shulha.  He won the Sectionals in 1961 and 1962.  He was selected as the “Outstanding Wrestler” each year.  (No NYS Tournament was held.)  He finished 25-0, with twenty pins, as a senior.  Warren was a mid-season All-American at Cornell as a sophomore and lost by one point to the eventual national champion in the NCAA Tournament.  After transferring to Albany State, he won the 1966 and 1967 NCAA College Division championships.  He was the “Outstanding Wrestler” in the 1966 Tournament.  He finished fourth in the 1966 NCAA University Division Tournament. He was a College Division All-American (1966 and 1967) and a University Division All-American in 1966. He also finished fourth in the 1964 U.S. Olympic Trials.  He is a member of the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame and the Section II Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The 1959-60 Linton basketball team, coached by Walt Przybylo, finished 16-0.  The team did not play in the Sectionals. Instead Linton played and defeated Diocesan League champion, Catholic Central, in the post-season.  The team was led by first team Parade All-American, Barry Kramer, who averaged approximately thirty points per game.  The other starters were Jack Washington, Jim Seaman, Bob Murray and Mike Sahr.  Coach Przybylo and Kramer are members of the SCSD Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 1960 Linton golf team finished 11-0 and won the Sectional title and New York State Championship.  Pete Famiano, a member of the SCSD Athletic Hall of Fame, was a member of the team.  Walt Przybylo was also the 1960 Linton golf coach.

The 1960 Mont Pleasant baseball team was coached by Tony Parisi, an Athletic Hall of Fame member.  The team won the Class “A” League title with an 8-0 record.  Mont Pleasant was also undefeated vs. non-league competition.  (No Sectionals were held.)  This was the first undefeated Mont Pleasant baseball team.   Ed Barnowski, a future member of the Baltimore Orioles, was the team’s top pitcher.  Joe DeCarlo led the team in hitting.  Athletic Hall of Fame member, Joe Loudis, was the leadoff hitter.

The Thirteenth Annual Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame and Reunion Dinner will be held on Monday, September 13, 2010 at Proctors.  Please contact Bob Pezzano (346-9297) for more information.
