National
Board Certified Teachers
The Schenectady
City School District has 56 National Board Certified Teachers.
With the exception of New York City, that's the most of any
district in New York State.
NBC, created and administered
by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, is a
voluntary system to certify teachers who meet rigorous standards
through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and
peer review. The process takes most candidates 200-400 hours
and up to three years to complete. Successful candidates have
to demonstrate that they know their subject area and how to
teach it through their teaching portfolios, student work sample
and thorough analyses of their teaching. They also must
demonstrate successful outreach to parents and community.
