Sayles School of Fine Arts

What is the Schenectady School of Fine Arts?
The Sayles School of Fine Arts is a House or Small Learning Community at Schenectady High School. It functions as a school within a school at Schenectady High School. It integrates Regents high school coursework with an interdisciplinary focus in both the visual and performing arts. Its purpose is to provide a rigorous academic program with consistent opportunities for students to explore the fine arts for future academic, career, and personal enrichment. Students will have opportunities to participate from the beginning to the advanced level in a variety of fine arts courses. All courses are designed to strengthen students’ arts and academic skills. Course offerings are subject to change.

The mission of the Sayles School of Fine Arts is to be a multi-cultural collaboration of students, teachers, administrators, parents and the community that values student’s artistic excellence and academic achievement. It is committed to artistic exploration and growth in alignment with the NYS Learning Standards.

Program Highlights

  • Students enrolled in the Sayles School of Fine Arts will have an enriched fine arts experience in addition to meeting the requirements of a New York State Regents Program. It is felt that students completing the recommended sequence/strand from the course chart will be fully prepared to pursue their chosen fine arts field at the college level.

  • All Schenectady High School students may enter the Sayles School of Fine Arts to meet their one credit state requirement in art/music.

  • Students may major in Visual Art; Music; Drama; Dance; Fine Arts; Fine Arts - Media.

  • Alternative scheduling maybe available in the Sayles School of Fine Arts to allow students to meet the rigorous state graduation requirements as well as take additional arts courses.

    Options include:
  • “Zero Period” before or after the regular high school day. This allows Sayles School of Fine Arts students the option of taking an additional ninth course.

  • Credit bearing Fine Arts Courses may be offered over the summer. Although it is recommended that students enter the Sayles School of Fine Arts in ninth grade, students may join the program at any time during their four years in high school. It is possible; to join later than ninth grade and still complete the required classes.

(Courses will require sufficient student interest to run and may not be offered each semester or year.)

Core courses meet the one credit requirement for art/music.

  • Advanced Level courses are more rigorous and have prerequisite courses.
