PV Students Celebrate Positive Behavior with Union Athletes
December 04 2009

Union College football players and cheerleaders visited with the students at the Academy of Culture and Communication at Pleasant Valley recently.  The athletes joined the students for their Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports (PBIS) "No Referral" party, which was held for students who did not receive a behavior referral during the month of October.
The players taught the students some football techniques and the cheerleaders introduced the students to a Union College cheer.

It was sure to be a fun day for the students who were filled with excitement and anticipation as they waited for the arrival of the players.  The students entered the gymnasium and then lined up along the side walls when unexpectedly, four Union College cheerleaders ran in  cheering and congratulating the students on their magnificent accomplishments.  The football players were soon to follow, breaking through a huge sign that the students made to welcome them.

Once the players were introduced, students moved through stations that were set up on both sides of the gym.  On one side, the cheerleaders modeled cheering techniques and taught students some of the skills that it takes to be a cheerleader in college.  On the other side, Union football players organized and ran four football stations.  They taught eager students an array of football skills such as passing, catching, kicking and a student favorite, tackling.

"Through this party the students were exposed to  college athletes who perform at very high levels both on the field and in the classroom," said David Lippiello, a fourth grade teacher at the school.  "Both the Union football players and the cheerleaders were extremely engaging and supportive of students throughout the party."

Lippiello said all the members of the school are extremely grateful.  "We would like to thank the Union Football players and cheerleaders, who continue to take the time out of their busy schedules for the people we all care about the most, our students," added Lippiello.
