The
Schenectady City School District is partnering with five
organizations in an effort to make positive changes in
all of our schools and to close student achievement gaps
across all sub-groups. Our goal is to instill
equity as the core of what we do by looking at
personnel, systems, structures and strategies so that
race, economics and disability will not be predictors
for student achievement.
We will
be working closely, under the guidance of New York
University's Metropolitan Center for Urban Education, to
develop a data driven system with structures that will
help us close achievement gaps and improve instruction
for all students. In short, we will undergo
transformation as we build a system that will drive how
we educate our children.
This
initiative is related to our designation as a “Focus”
district by the New York State Education Department (NYSED)
and the additional funds made available to help us get out
from under the designation. The "Focus" identification
does not mean that a district is failing. It means
there is a strong focus on areas for school improvement.
We are working hard to improve teaching and learning as well
as attendance and graduation rates.

Leaders from
the following five organizations are working with us in the
district-wide systemic turnaround process.
-
New York University's
Metropolitan Center for Urban Education
-
District Management Council (DMC)
-
New York State Technology
Enterprise Corporation (NYSTEC)
-
Learning Technology Visions
(LTV)
-
Northeast Regional Information
Center (NERIC)
Together with
these partners, we will be working to implement a cohesive
systemic design that will build capacity in the classroom, in
all of the schools and at the district level and will be without
limitations. Our partners will help us create the elements
of the system including the instructional design and assessment
tools. They will be here to provide guidance, technical
assistance, support and training throughout the two-year
implementation period.
Representatives
from the Schenectady City School District recently met with all
of the partners collectively to plan the process and move
forward. The process, led by the Metro Center, will
include completing comprehensive work and on a tight timeline.
The process and work will include input and cooperation of all
members of the school community.
As the process
moves forward, we will share updates and keep members of the
school community informed.
