The Board
of Education will adopt the
$160,624,500 budget for 2009-2010 on June 23.
On May 28, 2009, the
Schenectady City School District Board of Education adopted a
revised budget in the amount of $160,624,500 for the 2009-2010
school year which went before the voters on June 16. The budget results in a 5.8%
increase in the overall tax levy.
The only change
reflected in the revised budget is the restoration of six
library positions for a total of $480,000. These
positions were cut and not included in the original
$160 million budget
proposal
that was voted down on May 19.
The board had the option of
revising the existing budget proposal or adopting a contingency
budget that is capped at
$165,525,451
and
would carry a 15.8% increase on the tax levy.
The board agreed unanimously not to adopt a contingency
budget.
Board members discussed
possible reasons why the original budget proposal was defeated.
They noted that residents did not show up at the public hearing
to protest the increase in the tax levy. However, many
showed up at meetings, called, wrote and emailed to express
concern over the library positions that were proposed being
eliminated.
